CS407 : Routing and Switching

Course Overview

Course Synopsis

This course discusses the fundamental of routing and switching essentials along with some additional routing protocols. The course starts off with the fundamentals of networking topics and then discusses the routing and switching concepts in detail. In particular, topics like switch functioning, VLANs, VLAN trunks, routing concepts, RIP, OSPF, static routing, ACLs, and Inter-VLAN routing will be discussed in this course. Each topic will demonstrate/activities on packet tracer software to give practical knowledge to the students. In addition to this, study of IPv6 will also be covered in this course.

Course Learning Outcomes

• Compare and contrast the functions and operations of classful and classless routing protocols. • Construct and implement classful and classless routing protocols using various network topologies. • Troubleshoot and solve routing problems within a routing domain. • Understand enhanced switching technologies such as VLANs, VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), Per VLAN Spanning Tree Protocol (PVSTP), and 802.1q. • Configure and troubleshoot basic operations of a small switched network. • Describe how VLANs create logically separate networks and how routing occurs between them. • Configure and troubleshoot VLANs, trunking, inter-VLAN routing, VTP, and RSTP. • Develop understanding of IPv6 protocol. • Failover, redundant and load-balancing switching topologies • Dial-on-Demand Routing Protocol • Gateway Load Balancing Protocol • RARP
