SOC301 : Introduction to Social Work

Course Overview

Course Synopsis

The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with fundamental concepts, ideas and theories concerned with Social Work. This course is primarily concerned with the remedy to psycho-social problems and deficiencies which exist in relation to individuals and their social environment. Another aim of the course is to make students internalize that the field of Social Work actively deals with human services and social wellbeing by adopting a multidisciplinary approach in order to solve problems faced by individuals, families or society as whole. This course will also help students understand that an effective social worker closely coordinate with various human service authorities, agencies, government departments and other professionals to play an important role in social mobilization for relief activities during drought, famine, war, disasters, epidemics and any other such kind of emergency situations. Community involvement is the key for a successful relief activity like involvement of families, local authorities, religious leaders, elders, tribal leaders, politicians and other influential members of the community. Social workers serve as a frontline during any natural calamity or human disaster and help taking informed decisions in order to have well-coordinated relief activities. Social work have wide range of scope and deals with almost all walks of life like public assistance, social insurance, family welfare, child protection, women rights, community development, labor service, minority rights and welfare of handicapped or deprived people in the community. This course will develop a capacity in students to effectively understand and relate social problems in their personal or local settings with the broader social environment and critically analyze to reach a viable solution in personal capacity, resulting in a positive social change.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the students will be able to:

  • Understand the history and philosophy of social work and theories that guide social work practice
  • Report on the ethical and practice standards that guide the profession of social work
  • Demonstrate awareness of various roles of social workers
  • Critically analyze the social structures and ecological contexts which influence people through marginalization, oppression and privilege
  • Develop an understanding of how social work promotes positive social change and assists people in managing their daily lives and experiences
  • Self-reflect on personal development in emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and social domains
  • Describe the relationship between theoretical perspectives and practice approaches of social work methods with respect to various social work fields
  • Develop a conceptual framework and practice paradigm that provides them with the knowledge, skills, values, principles to evaluate their own practice in the breadth of contexts, working with individuals and families, groups and communities.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the spheres of research, practice and ethics of social work profession to help the people of diversity, including ethnicity culture, race, class, gender, sexuality, age and disability.
  • Engage in policy making, advocacy strategies and social change that advance social and economic justice.
