Course Overview

Course Synopsis
|
This course is based upon a wide-range of classical and contemporary sociological theorists. The main task will be to make sociological theory relevant to an understanding and appreciation of human society. More specifically, the primary goal is to help students to develop a way of looking at past and contemporary issues “sociologically.” The theory will be discussed as a tool for organizing existing knowledge and as a means of interpreting the reality and generating “new’ knowledge. An attempt will be made to understand each theorist within his/her own time so that one can appreciate the specific social and historical contexts, which gave rise to their particular forms of theorizing. An effort will be made to familiarize students with some of the key theorists and debates in sociology. In this course the theorists presented are not by any means exhaustive. Instead, the focus is on providing a foundation in some of the classical theorists and then a selective representation of contemporary works. One could see how the classical theorists have influenced contemporary sociological theory, both by providing a foundation for thought or a basis for divergence and challenging it.
