SOC601 : Social Policy and Governance

Course Overview

Course Synopsis

The course will enable the students to learn about the basic concepts, process, theories and function of social policy and governance. The course will depict the different ideas and concepts and their importance in social policy. Students will be familiar with wide range of topics, issues and programs that social policy addresses like; historical development of welfare state, who makes social policy in Pakistan? budgetary implications of social policies, education policy, social welfare policy, health policy, gender policy, social policy and social control, criminal justice policy, family policy, housing policy, globalization and social policy, governance issues, and green social policy. This course will give a chance to students to apply the learned concepts to real policy issues in societal settings to improve living conditions for the citizens of our country and the world.

Course Learning Outcomes

After completing this course the students will be able to:

  • Describe the basic ideas, concepts and importance of social policy.
  • Explain the broad historical overview of the development of social policy.
  • Describe the methods for financing social programs.
  • Analyze the link between social policy and social control.
  • Analyze and evluate the issues, challenges and prospects of reforms in education, health, and gender based policies of Pakistan.
