Course Overview

Course Synopsis

With the growing importance of English as an international language, it is important to introduce all concepts that fall in the domain of English Language Teaching. In this context, this course ‘Introduction to English Language Teaching (ELT)’ provides a comprehensive guide to different teaching methods and approaches. The course also facilitates with an analytical commentary on historical as well as contemporary issues relevant to ELT. The course aims to enable the students to explore the core components of ELT including the basic approaches involved in language teaching, the most appropriate materials and activities for an English classroom, and designing fair and accurate tests. The course will provide new insights and skills for teaching, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The content of this course includes a comprehensive introduction to ELT, functions, nature and acquisition of language, English as an international language, status of English in Pakistan, language teaching methods and approaches, teaching of the four language skills and teaching of the English sounds lexicon, sentence patterns and meaning. The course also familiarizes the students with the concepts of discourse analysis, corpora and curriculum development, lesson planning, computer assisted language learning (CALL), bilingual education, language and society and research methods in ELT.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  • adapt and implement pedagogical skills in ESL classes
  • select, organize, and use resources and materials in order to develop their students’ language skills
  • have a conceptual knowledge and effective application of various theories and tools of assessment in ESL classrooms
  • apply theories related to the teaching of language skills with contextualized and communicative methods
  • identify potential problems faced in actual ESL classroom situations through research projects
  • effectively use technology in ELT classrooms
  • comprehend the status of English as an international language in Pakistani context.
